BigTree Entertainment, which owns India’s leading movie and entertainment ticketing portal BookMyShow, has acquired food and restaurant discovery platform Burrp from Network 18 in an all-cash deal. Network 18 divested its shares in Burrp to Foodfesta Wellcare Private Ltd, a subsidiary of BigTree Entertainment, BookMyShow said in a statement. However, the value of the deal was not disclosed.
The deal will see key assets of Burrp including its employees and existing restaurant partnerships being absorbed by BookMyShow. Founded in 2006, Burrp lists over 60,000 restaurants across 14 cities, and was a prominent player in the restaurant discovery space until it ceded ground to Zomato — India’s only $1 billion dollar company in food tech.
Burrp recently ventured into coupons as well as ticketing for F&B events, which is allied with BookMyShow’s offerings. This acquisition comes on the back of BookMyShow’s ongoing evolution into a wholesome entertainment destination as opposed to just a ticketing platform. While it still leads the market in movie ticketing, new challengers like Paytm Movies has compelled the incumbent to think in a new direction.
BookMyShow itself has been offering customers the option to pre-book their F&B at cinemas while booking movie tickets. Users can choose from a variety of combos and attractive offers that are not available on ground at the theatre. This not only saves customers time but also pushes digital adoption. BookMyShow claims that F&B has witnessed 6x growth between 2015-16 and 2016-17 on its platform. The company also offers MyCoupons — exclusive and free discount coupons that can be availed at popular restaurants & cafes in the vicinity of the movie theatre. This offering is now present in over 80 cities across India.
